Sotomayor Square. Valparaiso - CHILE

Direccion: Prat, Valparaiso

Plaza Sotomayor is located in the city of Valparaiso, is one of the mandatory stops when visiting Valparaiso.

At the moment it is also constituted as an important archaeological center, since in its subsoil are located the remains of the first fiscal dock of the port built with the remains of the frigate Esmeralda captured by Thomas Cochrane to the Spanish army.

Originally called Plaza de la Aduana, then its name changed to Plaza del Palacio, until it got its current name in honor of Rafael Sotomayor, an important minister of the 19th century.

In the center of the square is the Monument to the heroes of Iquique, dedicated to the martyrs who participated in the Naval Combat of Iquique and Punta Gruesa freed between the Chilean ships Esmeralda and Covadonga against Peruvians Hu?scar and Independencia on May 21 of 1879. Below the monument there is a mausoleum where the remains of the fallen and Chilean survivors of the battle rest.

In the eastern sector of the square is the Command of the Fire Department of Valpara?so, the first in the country, in addition to two of the three oldest companies of the same, the First Company "Bomba Americana" and the Second Company "Bomba Germania" .
