The Plaza Mayor, or Plaza Catedral as it is known colloquially was the center of various social, religious, economic, political and cultural activities.
Originally designed almost square with an area of ??69 x 57 meters without counting the surrounding streets, ie approximately 3,250 m2.

Towards year 1600 the north side was extended, with which 500 square meters in that direction gained. You can still see on the east side of the square the cathedral and the town hall, in the other three there were houses with portals.

Around the Plaza Mayor, current Plaza de la Independencia, are the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama, the Municipal Palace, the Canal Museum and the Gran Hotel Central.
The Metropolitan Cathedral, an example of Spanish colonial architecture, was built between 1688 and 1796. The buildings of the Canal Museum and the Municipal Palace, the latter of notable neoclassical influence, date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century respectively.
