Pelourinho is a neighborhood and historical and cultural center of the city of Salvador Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
The history of the neighborhood is closely linked to the history of the city itself, founded in 1549 by Tom? de Sousa, first governor general of Brazil (when Juan III of Portugal was the reigning monarch), who chose the place where the pelourinho is located by its strategic location -to the top, near the port and the commercial region and with a natural barrier constituted by an abrupt elevation of the land, true wall of up to 90 meters high by 15km of extension- facilitating the defense of the city.
It was an eminently residential neighborhood, where the best houses were concentrated, until the early twentieth century. From the 1960s, the Pelourinho underwent a severe degradation process, with the modernization of the city and the transfer of economic activities to other regions of the capital of Bahia, which transformed the area of ??the historic center into a prostitution center and marginality.
