The Barra Lighthouse is considered one of the greatest historical attractions of Salvador. It is located in the old tip of Padrão, current Punta de Santo Antonio.
It is a conical tower in masonry with lantern and gallery, 22 meters high and painted with black and white bands. The lighthouse is built inside the Fort of Santo Antonio de la Barra.
After a tragic wreck of the Galleon Santíssimo Sacramento, of the fleet of the General Commerce Company of Brazil, in a sandbar in front of the mouth of the Vermelho River, on May 5, 1668, the Fort of Santo Antonio de la Barra was rebuilt. During or General Governo de Juan de Lancaster (1694-1702), the fort received a lighthouse - a cadrangular tower with a glazed bronze lantern, fed with whale oil. According to the Geographic and Historical Institute of Bahia, it was one of the first in Brazil and one of the oldest in the Continent (1698).
It was known as Vigia da Barra or Farol da Barra.
