Quillota 214, Viña del Mar Viña del Mar city boom started early this century to be elected as a residence for wealthy businessmen in Valparaiso. One of them was Fernando Rioja Spanish that he was very successful in banking.
Rioja in 1907 bought land to build his residence, which commissioned the design architect Alfredo Azancot French, author of numerous buildings in Valparaiso and Vina inspired by a refined French classicism. Impressed by the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1906 in the brick houses, Azancot devised a system of constructive Apern wooden enclosure filled with mud and sealed on both sides with lath, plaster and mortar, the system proved to be very robust and suitable for large buildings such as this.
The rectangular volume that makes up the building stands on a high floor socket contains three bodies in two heights: the spacious main hall, central core of the building, the dining room and lobby, the latter two precincts stand with respect to the respective facades. Access to the building consists of an imperial staircase leading to a covered terrace in the form of semirrotonda, all surrounded by colonnades, was of great magnificence. The windows are arranged vertically between columns and end in semicircular arches. The fine interior decoration of the building is the work of Azancot and two Italian architects.
La Rioja residence is part of a complex which included, among other facilities, swimming pools, tennis courts, stables and private theater, in addition to a large park built on palm trees, which still serves as a beautiful environment to the magnificent palace.
El Palacio Rioja operates today as a cultural center and museum, featuring furniture and jewelry from the residence. There are also receptions and official functions.
