Information about Mexico City
Mexico City, also known as the Federal District or Mexico City, is located in the Valley of Mexico, at an average altitude of 2240 m. n. m. It has an area of 1495 km².
Its historic center, better known as Zócalo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of a living culture that exudes everything accumulated since the founding of Tenochtitlán.
The oldest indications of human occupation in the territory of Mexico City are those of the «Woman of the Rock» and others found in San Bartolo Atepehuacan (Gustavo A. Madero), and were believed to correspond to the Lower Cenolithic period (9500- 7000 B.C.) 40 However, recent studies place its age at 12,700 years, and its origin, by its mitochondrial DNA, as Asian.
