Jemaa el-Fna square. Marrakech, Morocco City - Morocco

Direccion: Jamaa ElFna, marrakech, Marruecos

The Jemaa el-Fna square is the emblem of Marrakech. Undisputed nerve center of the city since all the roads of the medina lead to it.
It stands a few meters from the Koutoubia mosque, so it is dominated by its minaret. Surrounding the square there are also several more modest mosques that accompany the Koutoubia.

The square is large and is surrounded on all sides, except one, by the medina full of souks classified by their main activity. On the edges of the square a good number of caf?s have been established, such as the caf? Francia, and restaurants of all categories, which open their terraces towards the spectacle that takes place in this monumental scene.

Everything in Marrakech revolves around Jemaa el Fna. Thousands of people gather in this public space, filling it with colour, culture and business. Storytellers, teachers expounding their teachings, snake charmers, dancers, dentists, fruit juice vendors, acrobats, letter writers, water carriers... an infinite number of activities and people who gather and fill the square and its adjacent alleys as night falls.

The specialized food stalls, each one in its own way, flood a part of the square with the night, which is illuminated by hundreds of little lights and flooded with smoke with a multitude of smells.

In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed and inscribed in 2008 the cultural space of Jemaa el-Fna Square in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
