The Bernardo O Higgins National Park was created in July 1969, through a decree issued by the Ministry of Agriculture. Its initial extension was 1,761,000 hectares.
The park stands out for the large ice surfaces, vestiges of the Kaweskar or Alacalufe ethnic group and also stands out for the protection of species of flora and fauna.
Flora and Fauna of the Park
Among the wildlife, the Huemul stands out, which this park has one of the largest populations in Chile. We can also highlight the Chungungo, Huillin, penguins and different species of cormorants.
The flora stands out for being Evergreen Forests, besides having extensive peat bogs. The most characteristic trees are Coig?es, Canelos, Cypresses of the Guaitecas and Ma??os
How to get to Bernardo OHiggins National Park
It can only be accessed by sea from Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales or Puerto Montt by regular trips on pre-established tourist circuits for navigation.
