Information about Punta de Cana

Punta Cana is a town located east of the Dominican Republic in the province of La Altagracia. In this locality several resorts are located, whose total area is about 420,000 sqm (equivalent to 42 hectares or 0.42 km²).

Punta Cana is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), the countrys main airport, located about 30 km inland, on the road that leads from Higuey to La Romana. This airport handles 64 of all flights arriving in the country, which receives more passengers than the Las Americas International Airport, located in Santo Domingo.

Administratively, Punta Cana is in the municipality of Higuey under the name of Municipal District Tourist Veron Punta Cana borough. This district was according to the census of 2010 a population of 43,982 inhabitants, of whom 37,286 were in urban areas and 6696s rural area

History of Punta de Cana

In 1969 a group of American investors bought in the 485 or 77 square kilometers of wilderness, impenetrable jungle which was accessible only by sea or air. Next to the beach with great tourism potential for its beauty, there were only few fishing villages. The Americans planned to cut down the forest to export timber, thinking then exported to Puerto Rico soft sand for use in construction. Frank Ranieri convinced to buy a tractor and open the way to reach the place by land. They did, also clearing an area and building a little cottages where you can spend the night. They also built a small dirt track to land on aircraft. In 1970, Ranieri changed the original name of the place, Yauya or Punta Borrachón, not being a striking attractive name for tourist and business purposes, Punta Cana.

In 1978 the Paris Club Mediterranean joined the project of Grupo Punta Cana SA, within the project to build a 350-room hotel. Later they settled in the area of ??Bavaro, the Barceló Group and Newco.

In 1984 the Punta Cana International Airport was inaugurated, the more infrastructure such as roads developed. In 1993 he began to build the Marina of Punta Cana Resort & Club.

In 1996 they joined the project fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and singer Julio Iglesias.
