It was the Belize City prison until 1993, when the prisoners were transferred to Hattieville Prison.
In 2002, it was restored and renovated in a national museum.
It presents exhibits of Mayan artifacts and explores about 3,000 years of Mayan history, the history of the prison, colonial life and cultural exhibitions of the many ethnic groups of the nation.
