Basilica of the Sagrada Familia. Barcelona - Spain

Direccion: Carrer de Mallorca, 401, 08013 Barcelona

The Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia, known as the Sagrada Familia, was designed by the world famous architect Antoni Gaud?.

It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain, next to the Prado Museum and the Alhambra in Granada, and is the most visited church in Europe after the Basilica of St. Peter's in the Vatican.

The Sagrada Familia is a reflection of Gaud?'s artistic fullness: he worked on it for most of his professional career, but especially in the last years of his career, where he reached the culmination of his naturalistic style, making a synthesis of all the solutions and styles tested until then. Gaud? achieved a perfect harmony in the interrelation between structural and ornamental elements, between plastic and aesthetic, between function and form, between content and continent, achieving the integration of all the arts into a structured and logical whole.

Since 1915 Gaud? was dedicated almost exclusively to the Sagrada Familia, which is the synthesis of all the architectural evolution of the great architect. After the completion of the crypt and the apse, still in neo-Gothic style, the rest of the temple conceived it in an organic style, imitating the forms of nature, where ruled geometric shapes abound. The interior had to resemble a forest, with a set of inclined arborescent columns, helically shaped, creating a structure both simple and resistant. Gaud? applied in the Sagrada Familia all his findings previously experienced in works such as the G?ell park or the crypt of the G?ell Colony, managing to develop a structurally perfect temple as well as harmonic and aesthetic.

La Sagrada Familia is the undisputed icon of Barcelona and Antoni Gaud?'s masterpiece. It is the most visited monument in the city. Recognizable from afar for its towers that rise to the sky, it has two exterior facades that impact the visitor. However, it is inside that Gaud?'s genius is reflected. At present the basilica is still under construction and its completion is scheduled for 2026.
