Jesús María is a place that has very ancient roots and a notable cultural wealth. At first it was an indigenous town called Guanusacate, "dead or bathed water", which over the years developed thanks to the settlement of the Jesuit order. Currently it is the most important financial and agricultural center in the north of the province. In its surroundings there are important ranches that combine farm work with ecotourism or stay tourism.

The Sinsacate post witnessed the passage of the patriot armies marching to Upper Peru, and also of General José de San Martín when he marched to take charge of the Army of the North. San Martín received horse help at this post from José Javier Díaz, owner of the nearby Santa Catalina ranch.

Río Ceballos is located on a hillside and converges on the stream that bears its name, through which it crosses Avenida San Martín from Unquillo. Almost all the commercial activity of this city takes place on this avenue. It is also an important tourist destination.
