It is located on a hill at the mouth of the Bou Regreg opposite Salé, and adjacent to the Medina quarter of Rabat. It is listed, along with other sites in Rabat, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The shrine contains the graves of the late kings Mohammed V bin Youssef and King Hassan II, who was buried in the shrine after his death in 1999, in addition to the grave of Prince Abdullah.
