Experience life 400 years ago on Dejima Island, a restoration of the original island meant as a place for foreign merchants and workers to live during the isolation period. Although artificially landlocked now, the island paints a picture of what life was like for the first western foreigners to live in Japan

Stop At: Nagasaki Seaside Park, 1-60 Tokiwamachi, Nagasaki 850-0843 Nagasaki Prefecture

From Dejima, we will walk by Nagasaki's port to the Seaside Park, a beautiful and sprawling public space with an incredible video of the ocean.

Stop At: Oura Catholic Church, 5-3 Minami-yamatemachi, Nagasaki 850-0931 Nagasaki Prefecture

Built by French Missionaries in 1864, The Oura Catholic Church is the only western style building recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site in Japan. Shortly after the churches construction, a small group of japanese christians showed up at the church, later revealing that tens of thousands of christians had been living in hiding until this point for fear of exucution. This moment was deemed a miracle by the presiding Pope, and a depiction of this moment is memorialized on the site

Stop At: Glover Garden, 8-1 Minamiyamatemachi, Nagasaki 850-0931 Nagasaki Prefecture

Thomas Blake Glover, an enourmously influential figure of the Meiji Restoration, has this garden built around his home at the top of the Dutch Slope. Here, many other important western figures also built homes, all with their signature western architecture. Learning more about these men and their involvement with Japan will change the way you think about Japanese history.
