The original Mayan name for the city was Itzmal which means "dew falling from heaven". Something interesting to know is that this was not a Mayan warrior city, it was a sacred city where people went to worship. However, after the Spanish conquer, the Mayan constructions were destroyed to use their rocks to build the Spanish buildings that we get to see nowadays.

ITZAMATUL PYRAMID
We will not only visit the beautiful downtown of Izamal with its gorgeous yellow constructions, but we will also visit 3 pyramids located right within the city: Itzamatul Pyramid + Kinich Kakmó Pyramid + Hun Pik Toc Pyramid.
Izamal originally belong to the Mayas, but once it was taken by the Spaniards, many Spanish constructions were built on top of existing Mayan pyramids. One example of this is The San Antonio de Padua Convent, which was built on top of a Mayan building using its rocks and more elements. This was very common within cities that were conquered by Europeans. They used to do this to evangelize Mayans and convert them to catholicism.
