Distance between Hanoi and Halong city (Ha long Bay) is 160 km, this would take you about 3.5 hours on a normal road and it takes only 2.5 hours for driving on express way with (including a 15 minutes short break on on the way to stretch your legs or rest-room). A private car with experienced driver will make your trip become more convenient than ever.
