Irpina. Sorrento - ITALY

Direccion: Italia

Irpinia is a geographical and cultural region of southern Italy. It was the inland territory of the ancient Hirpini tribe, and its extent roughly coincides with today's province of Avellino.

The name Irpinia derives from the Oscan word hirpus, meaning wolf, and the wolf remains the symbol of Irpinia to this day. The Oscan tribes of the Sabines, under population pressure, migrated into this area in the 6th century BC. C. from what is now Umbria. The Hirpini occupied the region of Sabato, Calore, Cervaro and Ofanto, differing over time from the Samnites who populated the area from Molise and Matese.

Irpinia has a proud tradition of producing wines such as Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi, all of which are classified as DOCG. Its cheeses, including scamorza and caciocavallo, are highly reputed. Salami ( Sopressata ) and sausages from Irpinia are popular , as are their chestnuts , hazelnuts and black truffles from Bagnoli Irpino .
