TISSAMAHARAMA LAKE:

Tissamaharama Lake is just 1.5 km from the town centre. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, and the trees around the lake are so tall – Train Trees. In the evening, there will be a large number of egrets perched on it, which looks like a tree covered with white flowers from a distance.

Tissa Wewa is a reservoir in Tissamaharama, thought to have been constructed in the 3rd Century BC, either by Mahanaga of Ruhuna or his successor Yatala Tissa of Ruhuna, in order to irrigate paddy lands and supply water to the flourishing city of Tissamaharama. The lake was restored in 1871.

Tissa meaning: Happiness, Strong-willed, and Thirst.

WEERAWELA LAKE:

The main purpose of this area is to provide water for agriculture. In addition, freshwater fishing is done. This is a great place for bathing, boating, water sports, watching the sunset, enjoying the tranquillity of the environment and birds.

Surrounded on all sides by the green nature, Weerawila Lake boasts some of the most breath-taking views and along its spectacular mountains. The shores in lake have a unique charm to them and offer up some incredible swimming.

DEBERAWEWA LAKE:

The main reason people visit Deberawewa Lake to see the birds, crocodiles, and much more. Deberawewa Lake is one of the largest lake in Tissamaharama. You have the best chances here to spot a lot of migrant birds and crocodiles.

View over rice fields, temples, villages and beautiful nature. The lake is a reservoir to irrigate the rice fields in Tissamaharama and the lake is filled with lotus flowers and locals were taking a swim to refresh themselves. The lake sunset made the scenery so beautiful.

PANNEGAMUWA LAKE:

YODA WEWA:

The most noticeable feature in Tissamaharama is the giant man-made lake, a tank, called Yoda Wewa. You can walk around the lakes and stop at scenic locations to capture breath-taking views. If you are only doing a morning Safari then this could be a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

The rest of the land is comprised of rice paddy fields and coconut plantations. Aquatic bird life is abundant. In the evening huge flocks of egrets come back to the lake to roost in the trees around its edge. There are a number of rivers that feed the different lakes and paddy fields.

In the Evening you will see van loads of locals swimming and washing in the lake. They wash their clothes at the same time.
