A unique destination

The word Oil in translation is the container you use to place or store Oil. The beautiful beach got this name because it was a commercial point for loading and unloading olive oil. For the commercial cargo ships of the time, this particular point was the commercial station for transactions with the oil producers of the region as they loaded their cargoes destined for Egypt and the Middle East. Local fishermen have found around the area of Ladikos several clay containers that come from shipwrecks that traded in that area. It is located right behind Anthony Quinn surrounded by caves. The picturesque bay of Ladikos is now a busy beach that is part of several boat tours and also for several underwater activities that take place in the area.

AFANTOU is famous for it's huge beach with crystal clear waters, which is about 6 km long consisting of Pebbles and for its huge Golf Course. The Pebbles from here have been used in the construction of the sidewalks of the Old Town of Roads, the area around AFANTOU, has many monuments tombs and Temple foundations. The coastal settlement here was attacked and destroyed three times by pirates in 620, by the Persians in 653, by Arabs and in 807 by the Turks. After these attacks, the inhabitants left the coastal settlements that were visible to the attackers, and moved a little in land behind the Rocks, where the settlement is located today and which cannot be seen from the sea. The name, AFANTOU comes from the word, Afando, which in Greek means invisible. You will have over an hour to explore the area and the caves before we will be pleased to open the lunch, buffet back on board.

Stop At: Anthony Quinn Bay, Faliraki Greece

Next stop is Anthony Quinn Bay which is completely different than Afandou. It is a small Bay surrounded by high rocks with very deep water. In this Bay there are thousands of small fish and you are invited to use the complimentary snorkeling gear, which is at your disposal on the boat. You may also wish to throw bread at the fish that will congregate near by to eat. So far, no fish has ever eaten any of our guests. Not a single bite.
The bay is named after the famous Mexican actor, who starred in the International Blockbuster film, Cannons of Navarone in the 1960s. When Quinn came to Rhodes to shoot the film, he was blown away by the beautiful Bay and asked the Greek state If he could buy it. An agreement was never carried through however and after years of controversy, the Court ruled that it was unenforceable. So Quinn, never got his Bay. Pass By: Mandraki Harbour, Platia Eleftherias, Rhodes Town Greece

The cruise's starting and ending point is the beautiful Mandraki Harbour. This was the ancient ‘sheep pen’, the name in Greek being mandri, a name often used for small, encircling harbours. Mandraki was one of the five ports of ancient Rhodes. It was the naval port and was known as the ‘small harbour’ as opposed to the ‘great harbour’, the present Commercial Harbour. Legend claims that the harbour entrance was spanned by the legendary Colossus of Rhodes, but there is no proof of this. Today twin columns from the Venetian era, bear statues of Rhodian deer, a stag and doe, stand on either side of the harbour gap.
On the opposite side, lies the 15th-century Fortress of Agios Nikolaos. Named after the island's patron saint, St Nicholas, this massive fortress rose from the humble origins of a small church, transformed into an imposing bastion by the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John. Sharing this scenic view are three marvellously preserved medieval windmills!
