Next to the park, the sanctuary of the Virgen del Cajas is a place of pilgrimage in the open air where they say the Virgin Mary appeared. Stop At: Cuenca, Cuenca, Azuay Province

From Cuenca we moved to the Cajas National Park to the area of Caballo Shayana, where we said goodbye to our driver. The hike begins in the Laguna de Cucheros (height 3950 meters) Our naturalist guide will accompany us throughout the tour, which begins with a hike for 40 minutes to the blade/ edge (height 4080 meters) from where we observe the valley of Burines (height 4010 m) where there are several lagoons such as Burin grande, Burin chico, Ingañan among others; where we dive into the Andean pajonal while admiring the natural attractions especially the panoramic view of the sector and the canyon where the slope that will feed the Mamamag and Llaviucu lagoons descends.

Stop At: El Cajas National Park, Cuenca 010219 Ecuador

The route leads us to the Mamamag Lagoon (3500msnm) which combines a walk between streams and a small forest of polylephys, as well as traces of pre-Columbian cultures on the Inca Royal Trail. Short stop to take the box lunch.
The trail takes us to an important viewpoint from where we observe the spectacular valley of Llaviucu We continue the journey through the Forest of San Antonio we start the descent towards the forest of Llaviucu, where the landscape changes drastically from pajonal to high montane forest.

Stop At: Cuenca, Cuenca, Azuay Province

Finally, we will reach Llaviuco (height 3100 meters) which is considered the best place in the National Park for bird watching. This high montane forest is in excellent state of conservation, allowing to easily find very striking species such as the Andean Toucan Pechigris (Andigena hypoglauca), the Andean Pava (Penelope montagnii) the Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus), the Turquoise Magpie (Cyanolyca turcosa) and several species of colourful tangaras and some waterfowl.
The twelve species of hummingbirds recorded in the area are a sample of the high diversity reached by this group of birds in the montane ecosystems, and among these stands out the hummingbird Frentiestrella Arcoiris (Coeligena irie), the Rayito Brillante (Anglaeactis cupripennis) and sword Peak.
