Pass By: Government House, Blue Hill Road and Duke Street, Nassau New Providence Island

Government House, located on a 10 acre estate, stands on Mount Fitzwilliam and is the official residence of the Governor General of The Bahamas.

It dates back to 1801 and this imposing pink and white building on Duke Street is an excellent example of the mingling of Bahamian British and American Colonial architecture.

The graceful columns and broad, circular driveway recall the styles of Virginia and the Carolinas.

In front of the building is the statue of Christopher Columbus. This statue was imported from London in 1830 by Governor James Carmichael Smythe in honor of Columbus Landfall at San Salvador in 1492.

Stop At: The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory, 602 E Bay Street, Nassau N-4122 New Providence Island

The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory story begins in the heart of downtown Nassau, the Bahamas in the year 2000. George Bates, originally from the United Kingdom founded a recipe that would inspire his “Original” Rum Cake. Everyone loved his recipe so much that he decided to open a small Rum Cake shop, a store that has since then grown into the most favorite brand of Rum Cake in The Bahamas. Today, the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory still sits in the same location that it started out at, and has created a culture so irresistibly delicious that in 2014 it was recognized by the state as the Official Rum Cake of The Bahamas. Loaded with our top-secret ingredients, baked to perfection, and gently marinated in our signature brand of Ole Nassau Bahamian Rum, our cakes have become not just a dessert, but also an important part of a new lifestyle for both Bahamians and tourists.

Tasting and sampling at the New Duff, for every Bahamian, guava duff is synonymous with the word dessert. Ever since the first Bahamian guava duff was made, there have been countless reimaginings and methods to make this Bahamian treat. Reminiscent of the first duffs ever made by the strong hands of older Bahamian women in a post-slavery era, The New Duff captures the texture and taste of the original duff, boiled in a pillowcase and served with a silky and sweet guava-based sauce.

Arawak Cay offers the authentic atmosphere of the Bahamian Fish Fry with vendors selling made to order conch salad, fried fish and other Bahamian dishes. Arawak Cay was artificially built from the sand when the harbour was dredged in 1969.

There is a police station, a storytelling porch for special events, an old Bahamian rock oven, an open stage and an open grassy area with seating for the audience where concerts and other productions are held.

Sunday nights are when the majority of locals can be seen at Arawak Cay or Fish Fry as the locals would say.
