La Spezia became an episcopal seat in 1927, when Pope Pius XI created the new Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. The ancient church of the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta was elevated to the status of pro-cathedral for the new diocese on 19 March 1929, but the project of the construction of a new cathedral was immediately set in motion. The chosen site was on a hilltop cleared at that time in order to link the historic districts in the center of the town with those to the east, where previously had stood a Capuchin friary.

Stop At: Piazza Garibaldi, La Spezia Italy

When walking down through Via del Prione you'll find this lovely place, with the fountain-monument designed by the architects Antonio Leone and Cesarina Zanetti. This was executed by the sculptor Viliano Tarabella di Pietrasanta, was made of Carrara marble and finished in 1958. It includes a hollow central body, formed by two lateral elements, representing two veins that converge upwards, where there is a jet of water (you may see a heart shape, where you can take lovely pictures!). Symbolically, it represents the sea to highlight the marine root of the city; in the generation of water flowing from the base and in the ancestral form of the circle, is emphasises everything flows towards the north. The choice of design makes the composition calm, stable and composed, contrasting with the disorderly plant of the city, which grew up amidst mountains and invasions.
