Puerto Maldonado is a city in Southeastern Peru in the Amazon forest 55 kilometers (34 mi) west of the Bolivian border on the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios River, a tributary of the Amazon River. It is the capital of the Madre de Dios Region.

Nearby are the Manú National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. These are some of the most pristine primary rain forests in the world, which include several oxbow lakes and clay licks, where hundreds of birds including macaws feed on clay.

Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata River Jungle Walking

Stop At: Puerto Maldonado, Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios Region
You’ll be greeted at the airport or bus station and transferred to our downtown office for registration.

Then, we’ll take our transport to the lodge, followed by a boat trip up the Tambopata River to reach the lodge.

Your local guide will brief you on the hotel policies and you’ll have time for a nap and lunch before embarking on a two-hour jungle walk with an expert guide.

You’ll have the chance to see a variety of medicinal plants, trees, and wildlife such as monkeys, toucans, and macaws.

In the evening, we’ll take a boat ride to search for nocturnal animals like caimans, owls, and nightjars.

On a clear night, you can witness the stunning view of the Milky Way and its shooting stars.

Dinner will follow after our return.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay lick - Spoting Caiman & Piranha Fishing

Stop At: Lago Sandoval, Tambopata National Reserve Peru
Start your day with coffee or tea before an unforgettable journey to the Macaw and Parrot Clay Lick at dawn. Take a 45-minute boat ride along the Tambopata River, keeping an eye out for wildlife like jaguars or anacondas.

Upon reaching the Chuncho Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick, set up your scope to witness the spectacle of colorful birds for over two hours. Enjoy breakfast on the riverbank with stunning views.

After breakfast, return to the boat, explore small rivers for more wildlife, including capybaras, tapirs, monkeys, caimans, and felines. Take in beautiful landscapes.

In the afternoon, return to the city, head to Yacumama Lake for impressive sunsets. The lake hosts macaws, parrots, parakeets, black caimans, herons, and piranhas.

Take a rowing boat to fish for piranhas, then release them. End your day with peaceful rest at your lodge.

Day 3: Amazon Lodge - Sandoval Lake / Spotting Wild Life

Stop At: Lago Sandoval, Tambopata National Reserve Peru
After breakfast, a 15-minute boat ride transports you to Lake Sandoval within Tambopata National Reserve. The 3.5km wooden path unveils a rich tapestry of wildlife, featuring black caimans, giant otters, herons, monkeys, macaws, and wild ducks.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the "Matsigenka" culture during a visit to a native family. Engage in hands-on experiences, learning to use bows, arrows, spin cotton, weave, and create ropes from tree bark. Be fascinated by their exceptional fire-making skills demonstrated using only their hands.

As twilight descends, venture into the jungle armed with flashlights for a captivating exploration of nocturnal wildlife. Encounter porcupines, arachnids, sloths, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, and more in their natural habitat.

Following this exhilarating adventure, return to the comfort of the hotel for a delightful dinner and a well-deserved night's rest.

Day 4: Amazon Lodge - Canopy Walk - Puerto Maldonado

Stop At: Puerto Maldonado, Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios Region
After a delicious breakfast and a short rest, you’ll embark on a boat ride and walk along a path discussing the towering giant trees, including one that’s over 700 years old.

During the walk, you’ll observe the diverse fauna that inhabits the canopy level of the forest, such as toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, and orchids.

Later in the morning, you’ll return to the city to retrieve any left-behind luggage before heading to the airport or bus station, depending on your travel plans.
