From Colon Port Private Canal Lock & San Lorenzo Fort

We will meet at Supermarket Super 99 near the Colon Home Port, about 700 meters away from the Gangway. We will start by visiting the amazing expanded Panama Canal Locks named Agua Clara: The center offers a breathtaking panoramic view that contrasts two particular scenarios that generate mixed feelings.

We will drive along the coast and go over the largest bridge built in Panama with a stunning view of the mouth of the Caribbean sea.

Our next stop is Gatun Lake which consists of three steps or pairs of chambers. The transit inside these locks is different from the Agua Clara.

Time to pass by the Former Sherman US Fort, which complemented the defensive armament of Fort Randolph across Limon Bay. Stationed at Fort Sherman were two harbor defense battalions and one anti-aircraft gun battalion.

We drive along the rainforest to finally reach the San Lorenzo fort, the 400-year-old Spanish ruins of San Lorenzo are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pass By: Gatun Locks, Colon Panama

The Gatún Locks are set along the Caribbean side of Panama to the west of Colón. These massive locks are the largest in the Panama Canal. As you watch ships pass through the locks’ chambers, it’s easy to understand why the Panama Canal is one of the seven man-made wonders of the world.

Pass By: Fort Sherman, Fort Sherman, Colon Province

Fort Sherman is a former United States Army base in Panama, located on Toro Point at the Caribbean (northern) end of the Panama Canal, on the western bank of the Canal directly opposite Colón (which is on the eastern bank). It was the primary defensive base for the Caribbean sector of the Canal, and was also the center for US jungle warfare training for some time. Its Pacific-side partner was Fort Amador. Both bases were turned over to Panama in 1999.

Stop At: Fort San Lorenzo, Colon Panama

The fort's ruins and the village site are located about 8 miles (13 km) west of Colón, on a promontory overlooking the mouth of the Chagres River.
