Day 2: Discovering Thimphu: A Glimpse into Bhutan's Capital City

Stop At: Tango Buddhist Institute, Thimphu Bhutan
Start your day with a delightful breakfast and drive for about 45 minutes to reach a scenic trail suitable for novice hikers. However, the trail still has a considerable elevation gain, so be prepared for a moderate workout.

This hike is 2.4kms long and 400m above the valley, offering some of the most breathtaking views in the area. It typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon adventure.

As you hike along the marked path, you'll come across plenty of rest stops and photo opportunities. Keep an eye out for monkeys and deer, and if you visit during the middle of the year, you'll see bright, colorful rhododendrons dotting the trail.

After a relaxing lunch with some furry friends, head back down the hill by taking the path that joins the main track at the fork you took earlier. With its easy terrain and gorgeous scenery, the Tango hike is the perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday.

The National Institute of Zorig Chusum in Thimphu offers training in 13 traditional crafts of Bhutan, including calligraphy, painting, sculpting, metal casting, gold and silver work, wood-crafting, embroidery, paper making, masonry, carving, textile weaving, cane and bamboo weaving, and blacksmithing. To gain more insight into these disciplines, attending an art demonstration is recommended. Additionally, speaking with the institute's students can provide valuable information on how they have been trained to masterfully paint and carve intricate designs on various surfaces.

Day 3: Thimphu to Gangtey/Phobjikha via Dochula Pass | The Roost of the Black-Necked Cranes. (5 hrs drive, 2800m)

The centre offers current information on these famous birds, as well as other Himalayan animals and plants. You can start your search for the black-necked cranes using one of the powerful spotting scopes on the observation deck. These birds are easy to spot due to their distinctive black necks and can be seen all around the valley during the winter. The centre aims to educate locals on the importance of preserving nature and culture, in addition to providing information on the region's flora and fauna.

After the trek, don't miss out on visiting Bayta Primary School. In the morning, you can witness the school children running to class from their villages, attending a morning assembly and lining up for prayer. If permitted by the principal, you can attend the classes and interact with the children. Bringing small gifts like stationery, coloured pencils, or children’s books can earn you lots of smiles. Currently, there are around 200 students enrolled in Bayta Primary School.

If you're looking for a unique and authentic experience, Rinchengang Village is a must-visit destination. This charming village boasts a style of architecture that's typically found in Afghan villages. The homes are built from mud or rammed earth blocks and are clustered together in a traditional layout. Once you reach the village temple, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Wangduephodrang Dzong and the Punatsang Chhu river. It's an experience you won't soon forget!

Welcome to the most iconic religious destination in Bhutan - Paro Takstang, famously known as the Tiger's Nest. It is a significant religious site and a breathtaking masterpiece located in Bhutan. To reach this legendary monastery, visitors must undertake a 2-3 hour hike along a steep, forested trail, which rewards them with stunning views of the monastery and its surroundings from a magnificent lookout point halfway through. The final 700 steps to the monastery itself are optional. Legend has it that this valley was once under the constant threat of a demon, but Guru Rinpoche, the protector saint of Bhutan, came to the rescue in the eighth century. He flew here on a tigress, transformed into the wrathful form of Dorje Drolo, and single-handedly vanquished the demon. Guru then meditated on the site of the battle for three months and left the imprint of his body on a rock.
