Precious Pelican Point 3 hour private off-road tour

Family-friendly and private offroad tour to the Cape Fur Seal colony at Pelican Point.

You will be collected for free anywhere in Walvis Bay by your very own guide with the tour vehicle. You have the opportunity to give us any address in Walvis Bay via message once the booking is complete. If you are arriving on a cruise ship, you have the option to be picked up at the ship inside the harbor. On the tour you will be treated to a nice relaxed pace and plenty of stops to photograph the wonderful scenery.

The tour starts off in Walvis Bay with the first stop being the lagoon. This area is part of the wetlands South of Walvis Bay, and all of it has been declared a RAMSAR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsar_site) site. You might be pleased to find that there is abundant wildlife here. The Flamingos are not tame, but you can get very close, and with even a little bit of zoom you will get stunning shots. The weather is usually better in the morning, and your chances of a glassy ocean is much better. With a bit of luck you might also see the Great White Pelican here.

In the wetlands South of Walvis Bay is the Salt Processing Works (https://www.wbsalt.co.za/). This is a truly immense undertaking, producing 700,000 tonnes of salt now, with hopes of producing up to 1.2 million tonnes of salt annually in the future. One interesting feature of the sea water around here is that it turns bright pink when highly concentrated. From the vantage point of the top of the closest dune to the processing plant, you will be amazed at the regular form and color of this area.

Along the way to the coast, you will cross the pans along a service road, from which we have the opportunity to stop and photograph the pink water and salt crystals up close. If you love watching birds, the service road between the salt pans also give you ample opportunity to photograph the many bird species inhabiting the pans.

Crossing the sand spit which makes Walvis Bay the best harbor on the West Coast of Africa, your guide will show you some interesting features of the landscape, as well as wildlife if they are in the area. Black Backed Jackal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-backed_jackal) is quite common in this area. The main food source for this Jackal is the pups of the Cape Fur Seal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_fur_seal) colony at Pelican Point. At over 100,000 strong, you will never forget the experience of being there.

Also at the point is the lighthouse that was constructed in 1936, as well as some supporting structures. The lighthouse is unique in it's coloring, as it features horizontal black and white stripes. This was in an effort to make it more visible to passing boats in the fog. Together with the lighthouse there is also some supporting structures that are also quite photogenic.

There is also a small shipwreck at Pelican Point with a big legacy. This is the wreck of one of 14 Norwegian whalers that hunted the whales that gave Walvis Bay it's name to near extinction. This place is steeped in history, your friends will be jealous at home when you show and tell this trip!
