Gyeongbokgung was the main palace during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), and has more than 600 years of history.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is 5.4 million square feet in area and has a rectangular floor plan. On the south side, there is the main entrance, Gwanghwamun. The rest of the gates of the complex receive the following names: that of the north, Sinmumun; the one from the east, Yeongchumun; and the west, Geonchunmun. Inside the palace are the Jeongak buildings such as Geunjeongjeon, Gyotaejeon, Jagyeongjeon, Gyeonghoeru, and Hyangwonjeong.

Gyeongbokgung is also the first palace that was built, and dates back to 1395. It has been burned and restored twice after Japanese invasions of Korean lands. Several of the buildings that we can see today correspond to the last restoration, which began in 1990 and continues to this day.
