The origin of the Jade Museum dates back to 1977, when the National Insurance Institute (INS) founded the museum with the name of Archaeological Collection of the National Insurance Institute, whose objective was to raise awareness of the archeological richness of Costa Rican culture and finish with threats to its preservation.

To achieve its mission, the INS made purchases from collectors, parallel to the work of scientific research, reaching more than 7,000 pieces of pre-Columbian times made of materials such as bone, wood, ceramics, jade, shells, gold, resin, among others.

By 1980, the Jade Museum acquires its current name and includes among its work the protection and promotion of Costa Rica's cultural heritage, the carrying out of research projects in the archaeological, anthropological, geological, artistic and ethno-musical fields, in addition of the task of consolidating itself as a space for cultural recreation with the presence of musical, theatrical events, painting, etc.
