The Larco Archaeological Museum was founded in July 1926 by the Peruvian collector Rafael Larco. At the moment the museum is located in the district of Puerto Libre in a virreinal mansion that dates from the year 1700.

In 1925 the founder of the museum Rafael Larco bought approximately 600 ceramics and other archaeological artifacts from his brother-in-law. The idea of the founder was to preserve these artifacts and pieces of looters.
The Larco Museum is now so important that it lends exibition pieces to its museum "brother" the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art in Cusco.
