Lacerda Elevator. - BRAZIL

Direccion: Praca Tome de Souza, S/N - Centro, Salvador

The Lacerda Elevator was inaugurated in 1873. It is one of the main tourist points and symbols of the city of Salvador de Bahia. It is in Pra?a Cayru, in the Com?rcio neighborhood, near the Mercado Modelo. Connect the Lower City with the Upper City.

It was built by the engineer Augusto Frederico de Lacerda using steel parts imported from England, in partnership with his brother, the merchant Ant?nio Francisco de Lacerda, who devised the Urban Transport Company. The works began in 1869 and, with the two hydraulic elevators working, in December of 1873 it was inaugurated with the name of Hydraulic Elevator da Concei??o da Praia. Popularly known as Elevador do Parafuso, in 1896 it would be renamed Elevador Lacerda.

After its inauguration, it became the main means of transport between the two parts of the city, the Upper City and the Lower City. It initially operated with two cabins and currently operates with four modern electrified cabins with capacity for twenty people each.
