Information about Cozumel

Cozumel is one of the largest and most populous islands in Mexico on the coast of the State of Quintana Roo on the strip of the Riviera Maya.

The reef is one of the most famous in the world (and extensive with more than 30 km), especially promoted by oceanographer Jean Jacques Cousteau, who recorded a documentary about underwater life in 1961. Mayan settlement related to rites of worship to the gods , the island of Cozumel was sighted by Juan de Grijalva in 1518, but was not inhabited continuously for centuries. Corsairs Jean Laffite used it as a point of refuge, or docking point in trade towards Europe.
