Information about Puerto Natales
It has approximately 15,000 inhabitants, it is the capital of the province of last hope.
This city was founded in 1911, when it was known as the port of departure for livestock production in the area.
At present, this city is apt to receive large amounts of tourists (it is one of its main economic activities), because it is an almost mandatory stop for those seeking the famous TORRES DEL PAINE.
The exploration of Eberhard (1892), was made in the middle of winter, had as purpose to know the quality of the land and finally, after many dangers and sufferings, resolves to settle in the territory called Port Consuelo, in November 1893, to dedicate to livestock labor, today one of the most important labor sources in the area.
Settler Eberhard arranges the opening of roads to bring cattle from Punta Arenas and from Argentine territory, beginning thus, to populate this part of Patagonia.
In 1911, the President of the Republic of the time, Mr. Ramón Barros Luco, with the signing of Supreme Decree No. 832, gave legal life to the town that was born in the southern zone, the city of Puerto Natales.
