Under the auspices of the I. Municipality of La Serena, was founded on April 3, 1943 by Francis Cornely Bachman, whose research on the Culture Diaguita in the Elqui Valley sparked the first museum collections.

In 1948 he was transferred to the dependence of the Bureau of Library, Archives and Museums (DIBAM). In the same year was incorporated into the Plan Serenas President Gabriel González Videla, which meant the construction of an exclusive building for the museum.

Its facade incorporates a baroque portal, salvaged from an old colonial house in the city, belonging to the Conde de Villa Lord.

Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 17:50 hours.
Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 hours.
Sunday and holidays between 10:00 and 13:00 hours.
Closed Monday for maintenance of the units.

- General Admission: $ 6000 Chilean Pesos / +- US$ 10
- People over 60 years of age and higher education students pay 50 of the value of the input.
